Rail Baltica

Information

Rail Baltica is a greenfield rail infrastructure project designed to fully integrate the Baltic states into the European rail network. Linking five EU countries – Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and indirectly Finland – the line will connect major cities including Helsinki, Tallinn, Pärnu, Riga, Panevėžys, Kaunas, Vilnius, and Warsaw.

Unlike the existing 1520 mm rail system currently dominant in the region, Rail Baltica will be built on the European standard gauge (1435 mm). This will eliminate the long-standing break of gauge, link the Baltics to the wider EU railway system, and complete the missing section of the North Sea–Baltic TEN-T corridor.

Rail Baltica will provide a fast, modern, and competitive alternative to current transport options. By dramatically reducing travel times and creating direct connections where no passenger rail services exist today, it will open new mobility and logistics possibilities for the region.

With a planned length of almost 900 km, Rail Baltica is being developed as a dual-use line for both passenger and freight traffic. It is also an environmentally sustainable project: the entire line will be fully electrified, designed to reduce emissions, noise, and vibration.
